Violeta’s oldest daughter has a SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) which means she is sensitive with the senses. In order to relief her disorder, mommy Violet decided to get a loving golden retriever dog named Lucy. Although she was the star of the family and everyone adored her, Lucy couldn’t help her daughter to overcome the disease. The daughter was usually amazed by pets that were as not cute as others, or “unfriendly cat”, or the ones that everyone didn’t give any attention to. She wanted to break the stereotypical opinions of being different from the rest. Violeta was asked to have another pet which might help her out of the SPD. So they both decided to adopt a cat. The woman gave her daughter a duty: “Do some research and see if there was a type of cat that would fit well into our family (good with children, other pets, friendly, etc.)”

Days later, Violeta was invited to join her daughter’s presentation why she wanted a Sphynx cat after doing a research and showing a list of cats that were suitable with the family and children. Her top 1 was a sphynx – a hairless cat.

At first, the woman didn’t seem to like it, she left lots of negative comments about those bald cats who were in the “bad guy” role in the movies. But the daughter was so amazing at persuading her mom based on the presentation, they made up their mind to get a sphynx.

“I asked her if their appearance mattered to her, and she said it wasn’t about the way they looked, but more about their personality.”

“Again, this probably struck a chord with her, as she doesn’t fit the stereotypical mold for how a girl ‘should’ dress, and has been teased throughout her life because of that.”

Unfortunately, all the local shelters were having the same report: It was rare for sphynx cats to get around here. The mom led to another idea was finding the cat on the classifieds. This way seemed better since there was a woman wanted to find homes for her newborn sphynx kittens. Both of them were so in love with a little kitten at the first sight so they named him Ollie.

“His big bug eyes melted my heart, and his jumbo ears put a smile on my face that I could not get rid of. I knew right away that he would join our family.”

Welcome home, Ollie! That was a sphynx kitty that they got from a classified woman. What a blessing since Ollie came home, her symptoms of SPD “were decreased tenfold”. The daughter was so bonded with the cat who was always misunderstood, who was always in the least favorite cat among those floofy furballs. The daughter was so proud of having a cool cat she also got her printed Ollie on her backpack no matter how others were having some judgmental comments about the cat. Turned out for 3 years, the daughter had become a cat mommy who was likely to bath him, feed him, even plan to celebrate a birthday party for Ollie. The entire family became acting as “Sphynx cat advocates” afterwards.

After seeing Ollie had been living with the family for 3 years, the daughter felt like Ollie needed another cat to keep him company. They fell in love with a white mangy cat with heterochromia eyes in the shelter and they named her Snowy. Ollie loved to play with Snowy since they were the best couple in the daughter’s eyes. Soon after that, the Death took Snowy away after months being around with Ollie and the family. She was diagnosed having a genetic condition. Every member including Ollie were in the dire period, their hearts were broken in pieces and they were not so sure if they wanted to volunteer to visit the shelter again.

But they felt how devastating Ollie was so they decided to find another company on the local classified.

“I ended up finding a listing for a similar situation to Ollie, where the owner had gotten a Sphynx cat and didn’t know she was pregnant. From photos on the classified, it was really hard to see the kitten.”

Since it was hard to see the kitten, Violeta and her daughter came to visit and it was a surprise for them: “The hair on my arms stood up as soon as I saw her. It was like a little hairless version of Snowy! Needless to say, this little pink girl ended up being… Rosie!”

Wrap up the story, Ollie the cat and his new companion Rosie had a litter of sphynx kittens after the heartbroken time with Snowy!

“As much as we wanted to keep all the babies, we knew that it was our time to let other people feel the love that we felt when we got our babies.” So they decided to keep one sphynx baby called Poppy.

“I hope that Sphynx cats will be shown in their true nature as loving, silly, smart, and kind, instead of being portrayed in the exact opposite light.” – Violeta wrote.

Sphynx cats may not the traditional ones who have silky and fluffy fur but their personalities go beyond the sweetness. Everyone in the family – especially the daughter – gets a pawsitive life when living with Ollie, Rosie and Poppy. Violeta’s daughter made the best decision ever and brightened up the fam. They also created an Instagram account “ to show my daughters that even though their pets may not look like “traditional” pets, people could have positive reactions to them despite their different appearance.”
