Interestingly, the fine people at Indiana University’s Media School tried to figure out why people love internet cats. Nearly 7,000 people responded to Jessica Gall Myrick’s online poll, which she conducted as an assistant professor of journalism.

“It is possible that viewing of online cat media improves mood, but this activity may also foster negative outcomes linked to using the Internet for procrastination,” the researchers wrote.
