Man Opens Cat Sanctuary For 300 Cats After Tragic Loss Of His Son

Unowned cats, including stray cats and feral cats, are those who have shorter lives than domestic ones. Stray cats are free-roaming kitties who rely heavily on the citizen’s food supplements, they easily transmit some critical diseases due to not having vaccinated injections. Whereas the feral colony is definitely independent of people’s food, but they are more difficult to domesticate than stray ones. In Long Island, US there are thousands of poor cats who have no idea what the future holds need help. Some are sick, some are injured, some are malnourished, and the population of abandoned cats is getting increasing every day.

To solve this dilemma and help the cats out of misery, there is one miserable dad who lost his son earlier built up a ‘safe haven’ for all kinds of cats in Long Island. Losing his 24-year-old son Eric was not a thing that he could ever imagine, he found himself in love with cats more than before and he wanted to save those cats to invade the sorrow inside his heart. We all know that cats have an incredibly therapeutic cure, this unforgettable grief broke Chris Arsenault down so he needed to find comfort and healing from felines.

Happy Cat Sanctuary was born. Chris began with his first 30 sick cats to create his own sanctuary based off on his house. It seems like the number is quite big for a fresh start but he managed it so well. These cats and kittens were around his neighborhood so it was easy for him to trap and rescue.

From time to time, the number of cats was getting higher, he had to upgrade his area. It has been insanely 300 cats so far! The good thing is even when there is plenty of cats around the ‘kingdom’, no cat is gonna hurt each other. 300 furry freeloaders are playing, lounging, eating, taking naps, scratching in their own space. The sanctuary is professionally equipped with the main shelter, a big yard, fences, heaters, air conditioners, and even fountains!

Chris the cat dad wanted to make sure that the felines still feel safe and comfy regardless of having no interest in other cats.

“It’s [the sanctuary] so big that even if a cat isn’t that fond of others’ company, he can claim whichever area he likes as his own. The most important thing to me is that they’re comfortable and that everything is kept clean.” – Chris shared.

Back in the days when he started the non-profit ‘business’, Chris said he had to take care of 70 cats at a time. We can imagine the diversity of cats is enormous. Like I mentioned above, not only stray cats but also the feral ones, the sick ones, the injured ones, which means this kind-hearted man had to handle 70 different backgrounds and personalities. He did not let anyone get sick or feel left out, not a single one. One Samantarian also donated $200,000 to the sanctuary so Chris could be able to renovate the area, the cats deserve to live in a better place. It was said that the donation was used for expanding the facilities and adding some cool stuff in the outside such as trees and tiny hammocks for cats.

Happy Cat Sanctuary is truly the happiest place for kitties. No matter traumatic the cat is, a generous cat dad will always nurture and give affection to them. The cats can freely be themselves, they can safely “roam, scratch, lounge, and climb.” The purpose is not only for giving them the love that they lacked but also a place to have a special medical recovery if they get sick or injured. They also built a small ‘hospital’ to pamper those little critters. Chris said it was not easy to deal with those medical cases when he collected and rescued them. Some were cruelly poisoned, some were FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), some were shot at by people who have no humanity, and some were hit by a car.

Chris Arsenault now has several people to team up with and help him to care for the massive amount of cats. The cats love their savior, they become excited to see him every morning to get fed. Chris happily said: “They get so excited when I come in in the mornings. We have a great system and everybody waits very patiently.”

Chris doesn’t stop his benevolent ambition there. He is in charge of the “trap-neuter-return” program (TNR) which can rapidly decrease the population of a feral colony throughout New York’s Suffolk County. It was reported that feral kittens were uncontrollably given birth and the TNR program is a great idea not to let them over-burdened.

“When we do get calls about kittens, I take them in until they’re adopted out. We work with All About Cats in Freeport to handle all of our adoptions.” – He said.

Can you guess how many cats have been in Happy Cat Sanctuary recently? Thousands of them were rescued by Chris’s hands and you have no idea how wonderful this man is! It might be good news or bad news, you name it. But eventually, Chris is doing the right thing and his son would be so proud of him.

“When you love animals, it’s so worth it. It’s really rewarding being able to just see the cats happy and healthy climbing around on tree structures or basking in the sun. That’s how nature intended. Giving them a good life and a safe place to live – can’t ask for anything better.” – said Chris.
