Meet Apricot, An Orphaned Chimera Kitten That Looks Like Two Different Cats Merged Into One

What you are seeing right now is true, Apricot is a rare chimera kitten with a two-toned face: half tabby and half tortoiseshell. Apricot and his brother Pretzel were found clinging inside the wall by a new family who had just moved in. When they were working on the construction site, they saw these two adorable kittens.

“They waited for mom for some time, but she didn’t show for hours, so they reached out to Nashville Cat Rescue who then gave me their contact info as I have nursing mommas!” – Said Kiki, one of the foster care volunteers at Nashville Cat Rescue in Nashville, Tennessee.

Apparently, Apricot and Pretzel were the orphaned cats but they were soon welcomed by the mom duo Olive and Pickle. The ladies were determined to be very friendly and they were both pregnant. But that doesn’t mean they don’t accept their surrogate children. So, the blended litter of kittens was like a bunch of joy!

“Apricot and Pretzel (we have a charcuterie theme) feel like they have always been here! They were accepted so fast by Pickle and Olive and fit right in with the other babies.” – Another caretaker in the shelter Kayli said.

As you can already tell, there’s something quite unusual about Apricot’s appearance as she may be what’s known as a genetic chimera cat, a rare natural occurrence

Kayli also shared with us more about the backgrounds of Olive and Pickle and their mom duo journey.

“They were still a little shy and often greeted me with a hiss or growling. It was clear, however, that the girls loved each other and felt safe together. I spent as much time as I could with them, while still respecting their need for space. I even sat on the floor and worked on my laptop most days. I wanted to ensure as the babies came that they were comfortable with me assisting as needed, or just doing the simple necessities like weighing the kittens on a daily basis.” – How caring Kayli was! She would do everything to make sure that the pregnant kitties and their babies were safe and sound.

Pickle gave birth to 6 cute little kittens but one didn’t make it, sadly. While Pickle was nursing her kids, Olive was on the way working on her babies in her womb. At first, Olive didn’t pretty get along with Pickle’s babies but from time to time, she showed how motherly she was by claiming the kids as her own.

“A week after Pickle’s babies were born, I came into the girls’ room to find a new little baby—Olive’s first! She had another baby 24 hours after. With such a small litter size & the unusual time-lapse between kittens, I took her to the vet to ensure everything was okay. She had to go in for an emergency C-section, which ultimately saved her life as there was a deceased baby still inside of her.” – said Kayli.

“Pickle and Olive are such a joy to watch and their babies are undeniably cute. They swap babies and care for each other’s like they were their own”

“In addition to the babies they had, Olive and Pickle also accepted 2 babies whose mother, unfortunately, didn’t return for them”
