Meet Bazooka, An Overfed And Obese Cat Whose Life Changed Once He Met This Marathon Runner

Meet Bazooka, a beautiful and plump cat. A tabby cat in orange. He’s five years old and was surrendered to a shelter after his owner passed away. Because the owner had dementia and was likely forgetful about feeding Bazooka, he always filled his bowl when he noticed it was empty. This is why this ginger cat weighs more than 35 pounds (about 16 kilograms)! For a cat, that’s a lot of weight. We shouldn’t be angry with the prior owner because he did his best to care for and cherish Bazooka.

The overweight cat needed a lot of medical attention when he arrived at the shelter. He was even carried in by two employees who were taken aback by his stature. This chubby cat wanted to start losing weight so he could be healthier, happier, and do all the things cats do.

Bazooka was on his way to a new home with a qualified foster family who would keep an eye on his health and assist him in losing weight. He may be seen attempting to climb the stairs in one video. He was able to fulfill his aim thanks to his foster parents’ affection and support. Slowly but steadily, he began to adjust to his new healthy lifestyle and began to lose weight.

Bazooka’s health improved, and he was finally ready to visit his new family. His new owner was instantly smitten by the cute kitten the moment she spotted him! It was a lovely sight to behold. Bazooka was given a new name, King Augustus, which is rather fitting for a cat of his height (A Roman statesman and military leader who became the first emperor of the Roman Empire).

We were able to reach out to Robin Anderson, King Agustus’ new owner, and ask her a few things. We inquired about the cat’s progress so far and whether he had lost any weight: “He’s only been home for two days from adoption, so no weight loss has occurred yet. On Monday, when he was weighed at the vet’s office, he had gained a few pounds, weighing in at 36.4 pounds. The date of his next vet visit is February 14th.”

When asked what the most difficult aspect of caring for King Augustus is, the owner responded with a witty response: “Carrying him – and getting his crate/him in the back of the car.” “My arms are hurting me!” exclaims the narrator.

Robin enjoys working out. She explained how she stays in shape, and hopes Augustus would be inspired to do the same: “I’m a long-distance runner now. This past November, I completed my first marathon. I decided to reduce weight (127 lbs) five years ago after being diagnosed with diabetes. I had gained a lot of weight while on drugs for a skin ailment. However, I was able to lower my A1C from a 9 to a 4.3 and am no longer diabetic as a result of my weight loss. I run twice a week at 4:30 a.m. (4-5 miles each time) and then average 8-16 miles during the weekend. This past weekend, I ran a half-marathon, and I have roughly 30 more races planned for the rest of the year. I’m considering purchasing King a harness so we can go for a stroll together! Let’s get this party started.”

Augustus is still adjusting to his new home, according to the owner, who is gradually introducing him to the family (including their 10-pound dog). Augustus is a “snuggle bunny” who enjoys belly scratches, and Robin is looking forward to the day when he is entirely at ease in her house. Her favorite aspect of Augustus so far is his purr, which she describes as “louder than a Ford F-150.”

We asked Robin to tell us about how it all went down, how she found out about Augustus, and how long it took her to decide whether or not to take him in: “Whisky, my beloved Maine Coon cat, died in August, and I’ve been mourning him terribly. I found a fantastic Facebook group called Maine Coon Rescue Community, which posts from various shelters and SPCAs across the country. For a long time, I had been following posters, but the rescues were typically thousands of miles away. I noticed an article last week about King (Bazooka) being transferred from the Davidson County Animal Shelter in my state to the Wake County SPCA (where I live). There was a photograph of him attempting to be held by a young woman, and his expression was priceless. I knew we were meant to be together right away. I was able to empathize with his weight-loss struggles. We redheads, after all, have to stay together. I put down everything I was doing and rushed down to the SPCA to complete the paperwork. He was still being transferred when I arrived, and he hadn’t yet been entered into the computer system. He had been added by the end of the adoption’interview,’ and I was first in line. Whoopee!”

They’re still getting to know each other, but they’ll hopefully be a large happy family soon, and King Augustus will regain his health and be a happy kitten in his lovely new home. Let us all wish Augustus luck and hope that he is as happy as he has ever been!
