Many New York City bodegas have a cat in their store to keep the rodent population in check, and many city people regard cats to be a necessary part of the local scene. There’s even a special Instagram account for the furry pals.

A bodega cat, on the other hand, is not for everyone. One woman in particular, who gave her neighborhood deli a one-star Yelp rating because of the cat inside.
The woman stated that she had previously ordered from S.K. Deli Market in the East Village and enjoyed them. When she arrived in person, though, she was “disappointed” to find a cat perched on a beer display. “Aside from the fact that I’m allergic to cats, I’m curious as to what the health code says about this?” she wrote.

The review appears to have been removed at this time.
When Twitter user @SynKami shared her thoughts online, they sparked controversy.
“To whine about the bodega cat, you must be a miserable gentrifying ass bitch,” he wrote.
The message has already been retweeted over 7,000 times, with many irate people claiming that the woman could go somewhere else if she didn’t like it.
One bodega cat enthusiast remarked, “Shop elsewhere, your highness.”

Others remarked that having a cat in the store is preferable to the alternative.

New Yorkers also shared photographs of adorable bodega cats on social media.

People have also left 5-star evaluations on the deli’s Yelp page in favor of the cat.
The woman isn’t the only one who despises bodega cats. According to the New York Times, the city restricts bodegas from having a cat in their establishment.
According to the publication, the city’s health code and New York state law prohibit animals from being present where food is sold for human use, and establishments can be penalized up to $2,000 for possessing a cat.

However, bodega owners told the New York Times that they are willing to accept the risk because their businesses would be overrun by rodents if the cats were not present.
One bodega manager explained, “[A health inspector] wants me to get rid of the cat, but if I do, the rats will take over.” “I require the cat, and the cat requires a residence.”
