People In The Philippines Spotted Stray Cats Occupying The Circle Marks Near The Market

To raise the awareness of social distancing during the pandemic, people in Quezon City market, Philippines painted some white circle markings for the consumers to step in and politely wait for their turn. This effective call to action earned a lot of Filipinos’ compliments, turns out there is a slight twist when stray cats who are roaming around the area comply with this regulation too.

Every marked circle is 1 meter away from each other to prevent the spread of the Covid-19. As seen in the photos, each cat sits nicely inside the circle, patiently wait for food like humans. The photos were taking over the globe when the pandemic exploded. People on the Internet were amazed by their high awareness, some thought it might be their aloof cattitude, other people relied on the scientific fact of cat behaviors.

Coleen Joice Aquino was the one who took those cats in queue photos, it was her first time to see this one-of-a-kind scene in the Philippines. She also didn’t think her pictures would go viral after posting on Facebook.

“I took the photos on May 10 and these cats are just roaming around the public market where our vegetable store is located at. That was the first time I saw cats sitting in the circles.” – She said.

The cats were spotted occupying inside the circles for 10 minutes before going away, Coleen shared that by the time she took the photos, the residents in her city were implementing the Enhanced Community Quarantine (aka an ECQ).

“I just posted them because I found it cute and nice content to share on social media. But now it is under Extreme ECQ. And people here are following regulations.” – She explained.

Aside from a flood of funny comments to remind stray cats to wear masks while they are in line, or we should do something better than these obedient kitties, here is the truth. Felines like safe places, that is their natural instinct which is inherited by their ancestors.

Cat behaviorist Mieshelle Nagelschneider from The Cat Behavior Clinic stated that cats are attracted to enclosed spaces because hiding is both a predatory and a predator-aversion instinct.

“Out in nature, they will hide from predators in a carved-out tree stump. They will also hide themselves in this same tree stump to ambush their prey as part of their natural stalking and predatory behavior.” – she said.

“Placing themselves in a circle would give a cat a sense of security and safety and, at least in their minds, an increased chance of survival.”
