Elderly Cat Finds Her Way Home After 13 Years, And The Reunion Leaves Everybody In Tears

Janet Adamowicz was devastated when Boo, her pet cat, ran away from home when she was only four years old in 2005. She did everything she could to locate Boo, including posting “lost” posters throughout her hometown of Harrogate, England, and even placing an ad in the local newspaper.

Janet gave up hope after a year of futile research and eventually opted to adopt two more cats, Ollie in 2008 and Tessie in 2014. That was the end of it, she reasoned. She could only pray that Boo had found a new home and that she was still alive. But then, 13 years later, she received an unexpected call. “In 2018, I got a call saying I had a missing cat,” Janet explained. “I answered, ‘I don’t think I do; they’re both here,’ but they said, ‘We checked the system, and it says you own a cat named Boo.’ I thought that was strange, but I couldn’t believe it when I arrived at the vet’s office and saw her there – and she recognized me.”

“I have no idea where she had been; I believe she was a stray who was constantly being fed by strangers – or collecting her own food.”

Boo was in surprising good health for her age and years of caring for herself, showing mainly signs of exhaustion and dehydration. An unidentified woman brought her to Wicstun Vets in York, with no other information beyond that the cat had been found in a town 40 miles away and had been prowling around for a few weeks.

“As a young cat, Boo was quite active and enjoyed exploring the outside and going on adventures – but he would always return home,” Janet explained. “We have no idea how she traveled all 40 kilometers; it may have been for a variety of reasons. She has done exceptionally well as a 17-year-old stray cat – it is truly remarkable.”

“Despite the fact that she is just five years old, she knows me and has been my shadow since I returned home. The other two cats aren’t impressed, but at least Boo is safe and sound.”

When the pair was ultimately reunited, there were tearful scenes, according to the vets where Boo was returned. A representative for the vet added, “There wasn’t a dry eye in the building.” “Boo immediately recognized her mother, and the two were having plenty of face rubs, hugs, and meows within minutes.”

They had made the connection using microchip data from 2001, connecting Boo’s name with Janet’s mobile number. The veterinarians took advantage of the situation to advise all cat owners to have their cats microchipped in case they go missing, because, as this story shows, you never know!
